Overview
A solutions-based approach to a better life
Reverend Joseph Yans Lepatu and his wife Maria Lepatu primarily established PNGCCS in response to their witness of a systemic breakdown within society of family structure and leadership. As a result many thousands of children are becoming vulnerable and disadvantaged.
A steady migration of people to informal settlements in the cities of Papua New Guinea is creating a dramatic breakdown in the social support structure for individuals & families. Unemployment, poverty, poor health system, death and violence are taking a toll on living standards. Papua New Guinea faces a crisis in managing chronic poverty combined with the effects of HIV/AIDS epidemic and other life threatening diseases. Thousands of children are suffering — children who have been separated from their biological parents through sickness, death, violence or poverty. A generation of youth is emerging in urgent need of guidance and opportunity. As a result of this breakdown, societal issues such as crime, violence, neglect, poor nutrition and education levels & substance & alcohol abuse are increasing
PNGCCS recognises that placing value upon humanity at grassroots level is key to reversing the cycles and effects of poor generational choices. Helping people with real needs to help themselves and others at the same time.
The Community Aid Development Program of PNGCCS, Life PNG exists to be an advocate for the family and to promote equal opportunity through education and training by conducting Life Groups. These groups sessions aim to offer open informal education & discussion time for community members central to positive family and relationship models. Other areas of interest include positive parenting practices, early learning, preschool and primary education support, health and nutrition, parental education & relationship skills and advocacy for the role of women in society etc.
These are changing times and PNGCCScurrently works in conjunction with local church to develop support materials for children, youth, adults, families and pastors, particularly in remote regions, to help foster strong character and equip for a future somewhat changed from previous generations.
PNGCCS has plans for a Family & Community Life Centre building program in National Capital District which will provide continuum and expansion of The Strongim Pikinini Program and other initiatives of Life PNG. These programs will run using a combination of local and international volunteers and essentially model leadership from every angle. As a result many more children can benefit from the opportunity to live stronger, healthier lives.
